Finding ‘Jack’ in each one of us: Why Kindness Matters
Jack was a young boy who had recently joined our gym. He was with the younger group. His arrival had stirred up a ruckus amongst the other kids. They saw him as fresh meat, someone they could tease and mock without repercussions. Jack was shy, his voice barely audible when he spoke, and he often kept to himself.
His initial days at the gym were tough. The routines were strenuous for him, his body unfamiliar with the intense workouts. He often stumbled, his movements awkward and uncoordinated. His performance was far from impressive, and the other kids seized this opportunity to make him the butt of their jokes. Their laughter and derision echoed through the gym, further diminishing Jack’s already low self-esteem.
One day, I arrived at the gym earlier than usual and found Jack sitting alone, waiting for the training session to start. Something about his solitude struck a chord within me. I decided to approach him, and we started talking. Jack was hesitant at first, but slowly he began opening up. We shared stories, laughed together, and soon, we formed a bond of friendship.
This newfound companionship seemed to spark a change in Jack. He appeared more confident, his movements became less awkward, and his performance in the gym started improving. He was no longer the quiet, timid boy who was always the last to finish his routines. Instead, he was transforming into a determined young athlete, fueled by a newfound self-belief.
The transformation was not immediate, but gradual. Each day, Jack pushed himself a bit more, striving to better his performance. He started arriving earlier, practicing longer, and working harder. His perseverance was inspiring, and it wasn’t long before his efforts bore fruit.
A few months later, Jack competed in the Regional Gymnastics Championship. Despite being one of the youngest participants, he took everyone by surprise with his stellar performance. His routines were executed with precision and grace, a testament to his hard work and dedication. Jack was awarded first place, a victory that left everyone – including the ones who had once mocked him – in awe.
Why Kindness Matters in Sports: A Gymnast’s Perspective
As an aspiring gymnast, one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned isn’t about perfecting my vault or nailing my floor routine. It’s about kindness, respect, and sportsmanship. In a world that often prioritizes winning above all else, it’s easy to overlook the importance of these values. But let me tell you, they’re just as essential as the skills we work so hard to acquire.
Kindness is Strength
Kindness might seem out of place in the highly competitive world of sports, where we’re constantly striving to be faster, stronger, and better than our competitors. However, I’ve found that kindness is a strength in itself. When we support each other, cheer each other on, and offer a helping hand when someone is struggling, we strengthen not only our team but also our individual selves.
The Role of Sportsmanship
Sportsmanship goes hand in hand with kindness. It’s about respecting your opponents, accepting victories with humility, and handling losses with grace. It’s about understanding that while winning is great, it’s not everything. As gymnasts, we put ourselves out there, performing under high pressure and scrutiny. It takes courage, and everyone who steps onto that mat deserves respect.
The Ripple Effect
Kindness has a ripple effect. One act can inspire others, creating a more positive, supportive environment. In sports, this can transform the dynamics of a team, improve performance, and make the experience more enjoyable for everyone involved. It can also reach beyond the sports field, encouraging young athletes to carry these values into their everyday lives.
Anyone could have been “Jack”.
Jack’s journey from being the shy, timid boy to becoming a champion was truly remarkable. It was a testament to the power of kindness and acceptance, and how they can help someone break out of their shell and realize their true potential. He was no longer just ‘the kid in the gym named Jack.’ He was Jack, the champion, an inspiration to us all.
So yes, in sports, we aim to be the best. We push our limits, strive for personal bests, and celebrate victories. But let’s not forget the importance of kindness and sportsmanship. Let’s cheer each other on, help each other up when we fall, and remember that respect is just as important as any medal or trophy.
I should know… I was a Jack too.

This just goes to show, that kindness does not hurt, Riley has shown this by talking to this young timid lad and befriending him.
Being shunned by others is not fun, Riley’s kindness bought the young boy out of his shell and motivated him.
Riley is a great example to other young sportsman.
